Two historic churches on Chicago's Near West Side are set to receive preservation funding through Adopt-A-Landmark grants, as approved by the City Council.
The First Baptist Congregational Church, located at 1613 W. Washington Blvd., is allocated $1.46 million for restoration efforts primarily targeting its 200-foot steeple. The grant will cover all project expenses. This church, completed in the same year as the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, was designated a City landmark on January 21, 1982.
Additionally, Greater Union Baptist Church at 1956 W. Warren Blvd. will receive $750,000 for crucial restoration work focused on the building’s exterior masonry from 1896. This grant also covers all associated costs. The church is one of three surviving structures designed by William Le Baron Jenney and was declared a City landmark on April 19, 2023.
The Adopt-A-Landmark program aims to support the restoration of designated landmarks across Chicago using funds sourced from Neighborhood Opportunity Bonus fees paid by downtown construction projects.
