Eight multi-unit buildings are planned for construction in North Lawndale following a proposal by Mayor Brandon Johnson to the City Council. The plan involves selling eight city-owned lots and providing financial support to Missing Middle Chicago LLC. The project, part of the Department of Planning and Development's Missing Middle Infill Housing initiative, aims to redevelop vacant lots with walk-up buildings that have been absent due to years of disinvestment.

The development will consist of seven three-flats and one four-flat, with each completed building intended for sale to at least one owner-occupant. This approach aligns with the initiative's goal of fostering community wealth-building.

The $4.8 million project targets lots on the 3600 block of West Douglas Boulevard and nearby areas on South Springfield, Independence, and Avers avenues. These lots cover approximately 30,000 square feet and are valued at nearly $119,000 but would be sold for $1 each.

In addition to the lot sales, $150,000 from City bond proceeds will be allocated for constructing each unit within the buildings. This funding is designed to ensure that purchase prices align with market rates.
