In Chicago, Aldermen Andre Vasquez and Michael Rodriguez have introduced a resolution in the City Council targeting federal agents' use of masks. The document requests that the State of Illinois prohibit federal agents from concealing their identities during their duties, specifically addressing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations.

The resolution calls for ICE agents to be banned from wearing masks while arresting individuals in Illinois. It is seen by some as an attempt to gain publicity rather than achieving tangible policy changes. Critics point out that the city has no jurisdiction over immigration enforcement, which remains a federal responsibility.

The aldermen claim that "masked federal agents have been raiding Chicagoan's homes and places of business and abducting our residents without warrants." However, it is argued that most individuals detained by ICE are criminals with existing detainers and warrants.

The resolution concludes by urging the State of Illinois to pass legislation requiring federal agents to wear appropriate uniforms and present identification when conducting arrests. This suggestion faces criticism since state legislatures cannot dictate policies for federal law enforcement agencies.

Alderman Vasquez previously stated on the City Council floor his vision for a city without police as a "North Star" for the nation. In support of the resolution, Rodriguez posted on Instagram advocating for transparency, accountability, and community safety.

He wrote: "Andre Vasquez (40) and I took a stand for transparency, accountability, and community safety by introducing a resolution calling on the Illinois General Assembly to ban federal agents from concealing their identities by wearing masks."

Despite these efforts, some argue that undocumented immigrants receive significant support in Chicago. Mayor Brandon Johnson reportedly allocated over $400 million in tax dollars towards undocumented communities over two years amid budget shortfalls.

Critics suggest collaborating with ICE could help address budget concerns while supporting legal citizens and improving Chicago's business climate.
