Summer’s not quite over, and Chicago’s airport statistics prove it, with record-breaking travel statistics logged during 2016’s warmest months and predictions for heavy Labor Day weekend traffic from the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA).

“This has been one of the busiest summers on record for air travel at Chicago’s airports and that trend will continue over the Labor Day holiday weekend,” CDA Commissioner Ginger Evans said. “We are coordinating closely with our airport partners to ensure passengers enjoy a smooth and efficient travel experience from the curb to the gate at O’Hare and Midway.”

To ease travelers’ fatigue during waiting periods on long lines, Midway Airport authorities announced that live entertainment was scheduled in the baggage claim area, while O’Hare offered the same amenity in its domestic terminal areas. Additionally, both airports are offering free lemonade Tuesday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The number of O’Hare passengers is anticipated to increase 5 percent over last year during the holiday period, topping 1.3 million individuals. Midway authorities project over 76,000 passengers, for a total of more than 1.7 million travelers.
