A Feb. 18 post on Citizens Report American Irish Culture's website said Gov. Bruce Rauner “takes the cake for having the nerve to turn a dead cop’s funeral into a campaign stop.”

The day before, Rauner spoke at the funeral of Chicago Police Cmdr. Paul Bauer at the Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church in the Bridgeport community. Bauer was shot and killed Feb. 13 outside the Thompson Center in the Loop.

On Feb. 18, blogger Izzy Cusack wrote: “Watching this unctuous phony spouting bromides from the pulpit, showboating in front of the coffin of this brave policeman is shocking. Rauner needs to be called out for his cowardly actions and his spineless faux compassion in a craven attempt to continue his con of voters in Illinois.”

Illinois State House Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton), gubernatorial candidate in next month primary, plan's to attend Sunday's , "Coffee With the Candidates" at Oswego East High School.

He added that he was “shocked that Rauner could stand on the altar of a Catholic church without being struck by lightning after promoting taxpayer funding of abortion and lying about it to the cardinal. Just one of the millions of lies he has told to the people of this state in the last couple years.”

A Feb. 14 posting on the site said that a groundswell of support for state Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton)  in the upcoming Republican primary for governor on March 20 is coalescing in the Irish community. The blog posting said that Irish American radio personality Mike Houlihan is spearheading a fundraiser, Irish for Ives from 5-7 p.m. March 5 at Reilly’s Daughter Irish Pub, 4010 W. 111th St. in Oak Lawn.

“Jeanne Ives is the only pro-life candidate in this race,” Houlihan was quoted as saying, “and the only candidate with the courage to confront not only failed Gov. Bruce Rauner, but also Illinois Speaker of the House Michael Madigan (D-Chicago), whose iron grip on the Legislature is dragging the state into bankruptcy and insolvency. I want to see Jeanne Ives elected and so do many of my friends in the Irish community.”

The post added that “she (Ives) trounced Rauner in front of the Tribune editorial board in late January, triggering major donors to step forward.”

“Rauner is afraid to debate her,” Houlihan said, “and we’re hoping to bring Jeanne over the top for St. Patrick’s Day and help her win the Republican nomination for governor.”
