Arena, Martwick candidates lose Hitch Elementary school council election

The Hitch Elementary School elections have ended with candidates endorsed by Chicago Alderman John Arena (45th Ward) and state Rep. Robert Martwick (D-Chicago) falling short in their run for the local school council (LSC).

Chicago Police sergeant Ammie Kessem, who is challenging Martwick in the 19th District in November’s general election, recently posted congratulations to Elizabeth Globke and John McInernay on their victories.

“It looks like our effort to thwart my opponent and his good friend John Arena’s influence into our schools was met with overwhelming success,” Kessem wrote.

In the days leading up to the April 18 elections, Martwick went public on his Facebook page with his support for Hitch school candidates Maggie Baran, Jennifer Meyer Jones and JC Strzalka-Steil.

In the Canty school elections, Martwick threw his support behind Daniel Pogorzelski; and at Portage Park, he supported Jacob Kaplan.

Chicago City Wire has also previously reported Kessem could be pitted against Arena in his 2019 re-election run if her bid against Martwick does not prove successful.

Arena has recently run afoul of a growing number of voters in his Jefferson Park neighborhood over his support for a subsidized housing plan pegged for the neighborhood that would double the number of Section 8 dwellers in the community.
