Jeanette B. Taylor and Nicole J. Johnson will participate in a run-off election on April 2 to see who will serve as 20th Ward alderman after voters failed to elect a clear winner on Tuesday.
With 37 of 39 precincts reporting, Taylor received 2,045 votes, or 28.9 percent of the overall vote. Johnson came in second with 1,561 votes (22.1 percent), according to the Chicago Board of Elections.
Under Chicago election laws, a run-off election is required if no candidate garners at least 50 percent of the votes.
Chicago has 1,581,755 registered voters, but only 530,797 (33.56 percent) cast ballots on Tuesday, which was a near record low turnout. There were a total of 7,068 votes cast in the Ward 20 alderman race.
All results from Tuesday’s vote are unofficial until certified by the election board on March 13.
