Incumbent Howard B. Brookins Jr. and Marvin McNeil will participate in a run-off election on April 2 to see who will serve as 21st Ward alderman after voters failed to elect a clear winner on Tuesday.
With 53 of 54 precincts reporting, Brookins received 5,452 votes, or 45.7 percent of the overall vote. McNeil came in second with 3,014 votes (25.2 percent), according to the Chicago Board of Elections.
Under Chicago election laws, a run-off election is required if no candidate garners at least 50 percent of the votes.
Chicago has 1,581,755 registered voters, but only 530,797 (33.56 percent) cast ballots on Tuesday, which was a near record low turnout. There were a total of 11,939 votes cast in the Ward 21 alderman race.
All results from Tuesday’s vote are unofficial until certified by the election board on March 13.
