Milagros Santiago and Felix Cardona Jr. will participate in a run-off election on April 2 to see who will serve as Ward 31 alderman after voters failed to elect a clear winner on Tuesday.

With all 41 precincts reporting, Santiago received 2,517 votes, or 40.44 percent of the overall vote. Cardona came in second with 2,067 votes (33.21 percent), according to the Chicago Board of Elections.

Under Chicago election laws, a run-off election is required if no candidate garners at least 50 percent of the votes.

Chicago has 1,581,755 registered voters, but only 530,797 (33.56 percent) cast ballots on Tuesday, which was a near record low turnout. There were a total of 6,224 votes cast in the Ward 31 alderman race.

All results from Tuesday’s vote are unofficial until certified by the election board on March 13.
