The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Public Building Commission (PBC) have initiated a street reconstruction project on Central Park Avenue in the 17th Ward's Chicago Lawn neighborhood. The project, located between 71st and 73rd Streets, aims to address infrastructure issues dating back to the 1930s when many streets were built under the Federal Works Progress Administration without essential features like sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and adequate drainage.

Alderman David Moore expressed his gratitude for the project, stating, "This is a long-awaited investment for the residents of the 17th Ward’s Chicago Lawn Community. I want to thank CDOT and the Public Building Commission for delivering this project, and I look forward to bringing more much-needed improvements like this to our community."

The $5.1 million project will be managed by PBC in collaboration with CDOT. Planned enhancements include full-depth roadway reconstruction, new stormwater drainage structures, sewer main improvements, water main replacement, lead service line replacement in partnership with the Department of Water Management, new curbs and gutters, sidewalk installation with ADA-compliant ramps, new driveways and alley aprons, upgraded lighting and signage, pavement markings, and tree planting.

"WPA street reconstructions are unique projects that involve rebuilding a street from the bottom up," explained CDOT Commissioner Tom Carney. "These projects allow us to deliver long-overdue infrastructure like sidewalks, curbs, and drainage that make a real difference in residents’ daily lives. We’re grateful to the Public Building Commission for their partnership in delivering this project."

Ray Giderof of PBC emphasized their commitment to improving city infrastructure: "The Public Building Commission of Chicago is proud to partner with Alderman David Moore and the Chicago Department of Transportation to bring this vital investment to life. As part of PBC’s Chairman Mayor Brandon Johnson’s initiative to build better together... We look forward to delivering a modern, durable roadway that will serve residents, businesses, and visitors for decades to come."

This initiative is part of CDOT's broader efforts funded through Chicago’s Capital Improvement Program. Over 80 WPA blocks are currently in various stages of design and construction across the city.
