Patrick J. O'Connor and Andre Vasquez will participate in a run-off election on April 2 to see who will serve as Ward 40 alderman after voters failed to elect a clear winner on Tuesday.
With all 39 precincts reporting, O'Connor received 4,249 votes, or 33.32 percent of the overall vote. Vasquez came in second with 2,572 votes (20.17 percent), according to the Chicago Board of Elections.
Under Chicago election laws, a run-off election is required if no candidate garners at least 50 percent of the votes.
Chicago has 1,581,755 registered voters, but only 530,797 (33.56 percent) cast ballots on Tuesday, which was a near record low turnout. There were a total of 12,753 votes cast in the Ward 40 alderman race.
All results from Tuesday’s vote are unofficial until certified by the election board on March 13.
