Jan Schakowsky's retirement from representing Illinois' 9th congressional district has prompted a rush of candidates hoping to fill her seat. The district, drawn to favor Democrats, includes parts of Chicago and extends to Crystal Lake in McHenry County. Historically known as a Jewish seat, it has been represented by a Jewish Democrat since 1949, except for one term.

Currently, there are 12 Democrats running for the position. Notable contenders include Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss and State Senators Laura Fine and Mike Simmons. With so many candidates, it's possible that someone could win with just 20 percent of the vote in the primary.

Among those vying for attention is Bushra Amiwala, a member of Skokie's board of education and admirer of Ilhan Omar. Amiwala has expressed admiration for Omar on social media and has aligned herself with leftist views like "Medicare for All" and the "Green New Deal."

Amiwala previously ran unsuccessfully for Cook County Board but later secured a position on the Skokie school board. Her past includes working as an intern for Republican U.S. Senator Mark Kirk during his reelection campaign.

Chicago Magazine speculates that if elected, Amiwala might join The Squad, a group of progressive U.S. House members including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar.

Voters in the 9th district who oppose having a supporter of The Squad represent them need to be proactive now.
