Former teacher Rena Marzen, who retired in July 2018, saved $55,768 toward a pension over 12 years working for public schools, Chicago Teachers' Pension Fund records show.

Over 30 years of retirement, Marzen would collect as much as $1.1 million, according to a projection by Local Government Information Services (LGIS), which publishes Chicago City Wire.

The projection assumes Marzen received $23,221 in the first year of retirement, then 3 percent annual increases thereafter, compounded.

After 3 years of retirement, Marzen will have already received $71,775 in retirement benefits, or more than the sum total of the retiree's contributions to the teachers' pension fund.
