Former state university employee Stanhope paid in $13K to pension fund, could collect $305K in retirement

Former state university employee George Stanhope, who retired in July 2017, saved $13,288 toward a pension over 4 years working for state universities, State Universities Retirement System of Illinois records show.

Over 30 years of retirement, Stanhope would collect as much as $304,686, according to a projection by Local Government Information Services (LGIS), which publishes Chicago City Wire.

The projection assumes Stanhope received $6,404 in the first year of retirement, then 3 percent annual increases thereafter, compounded.

After 3 years of retirement, Stanhope will have already received $19,794 in retirement benefits, or more than the sum total of the retiree's contributions to the state pension fund.
