The Illinois Republican Party stated in a blog post that it is "demanding" that state Sen. Martin Sandoval (D-Chicago) step down in the wake of a growing scandal over photos of a man posed with a fake rifle pointed at person in a costume of President Donald Trump wearing traditional Mexican clothing at one of his fundraisers.
The photos were later posted to social media, prompting members of the Republican organization to begin circulating a petition this week calling for Sandoval’s ouster.
“It is inexcusable for a state senator’s event to promote violence against our president,” the group said in a blog posted to its website.
Several media outlets have reported the incident took place at an Aug. 16 MAS Havana Night Golf Clasico fundraiser.
Sandoval eventually issued a public apology that came almost two days after the photos had been posted to Facebook.
