ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 27: Slaughter Measure to Expand Prison Sentencing Credits Signed by Governor

Generalcourt3

Illinois State House District 27 issued the following announcement on Sept. 9.

Continuing his efforts to reform the criminal justice system in Illinois, state Rep. Justin Slaughter, D- Chicago, recently championed legislation that expands inmates’ eligibility for sentencing credits.

“Illinois spends far too much money annually on keeping people behind bars, and I think that it is about time we reduce the amount of money put toward incarcerating people and put it back into our communities across the state,” Slaughter said. “This legislation will help incarcerated individuals work toward a better future while decreasing prison populations and benefitting our state’s finances.”

Slaughter’s House Bill 94 aims to reduce state expenditures on the prison system, decrease prison populations and promote a fairer criminal justice system. The measure passed both the House and Senate and was recently signed into law by Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

“With this legislation, we can move one step closer to undoing the harm caused by outdated criminal justice initiatives,” said Slaughter. “I look forward to continue working with my colleagues in Springfield to reform our criminal justice system while creating a better future for all Illinois families.”
