ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 26: Buckner Emphasizes Important Information Amidst COVID-19 Preparations

Health

Illinois State House District 26 issued the following announcement on March 16.

In response to growing community concern regarding COVID-19, more commonly referred to as Coronavirus, state Rep. Kam Buckner, D-Chicago, is highlighting good practices and promoting state resources for individuals impacted by COVID-19.

“It is vital that we come together as a community to be proactive right now in working to prevent further COVID-19 impact,” Buckner said. “These are tough times for everyone, especially those impacted by the closures of local restaurants, bars and other establishments. I want residents to know that there are still options available. No one should have to go hungry in the name ofhealth.”

Buckner is highlighting programs that provide relief to residents without access to paid sick leave, or unable to work due to COVID-19 closures, such as unemployment insurance through the Illinois Department of Employment Security. State Unemployment Insurance is designed to replace lost wages when residents are out of work in situations like mandated business closures.

The Illinois Department of Public Health recommends avoiding close contact with people who are sick, staying home if you feel sick except to get medical care, covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue, cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces (such as tables, countertops, light switches, doorknobs, etc.), and washing hands often for at least 20 seconds. If soap is not readily available, utilize hand sanitizer that is at least 60% alcohol.

“Taking proactive steps is more important now than ever. If you can stay home, please do. Following CDC guidelines for personal health and home-based habits is the best way to keep you and your families safe and healthy,” Buckner said. “I am committed to keeping residents up to date as we all navigate this difficult time.”
