Vast majority of coronavirus fatalities in Chicago had underlying conditions

More than 91% of Chicago residents who have died from COVID-19 had chronic underlying conditions, according to Chicago Department of Public Health data as of April 16.

Among the 420 deaths resulting from coronavirus so far this year in Chicago, 397 involved patients with known medical histories, the department reported. A total of 363, or 91.4%, had underlying conditions – diabetes, hypertension or lung disease – while 34 of the deaths, or 8.6%, had no underlying serious conditions, the department said.

Another 23 fatalities are under investigation.

The department’s breakdown of other characteristics about the Chicago COVID-19 deaths shows that a vast majority – 58.5% – were age 70 and over. The percentage in the 60-to-69 category was 18.6, while the percentage of deaths for those ages 50 to 59 was 12.9.

In the gender category, males made up 60% of the fatalities, while females represent about 40%.

In race and ethnicity, non-Latino blacks represented the largest share of deaths at 60.2%. Latinos accounted for 14.3%, while non-Latino whites represented 16.7% of the coronavirus deaths in the city.

Meanwhile, the number of daily deaths reported in the past week have been moving downward, according to the department.
