Illinois State Senate District 10 issued the following announcement on April 16.

State Senator Robert Martwick (D-Chicago) is raising awareness of Child Abuse Prevention Month and highlighting the resources available to report abuse and neglect within our communities during the COVID-19 outbreak.

“Even during the outbreak, we should always be on the lookout for child abuse and neglect,” Martwick said. “The novel coronavirus has caused schools to close, and this may leave many children in volatile homes. If you suspect child abuse or neglect within your community, there are call service lines in Illinois that are available and here to help.”

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and there are resources available to get help for struggling children. In Illinois, DCFS reports there are more than 10,000 substantiated reports of child abuse and neglect every year.

If you suspect a child is being abused or neglected, the 24-hour Child Abuse Hotline is available at 800-25-ABUSE (800-252-2873 or 1-800-358-5117). If you believe a child is in immediate danger, you should call 911 as soon as you can. All calls are confidential.
