Illinois State House District 27 issued the following announcement on May 19.
State Rep. Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, is highlighting the Illinois Department of Human Services’ (IDHS) recent announcement of Pandemic Electronic Balance Transfer (P-EBT) benefits, which will provide families with school-aged children who qualify for free or reduced price school meals with extra money to buy food during the pandemic.
“As our nation faces record job loss and families everywhere are struggling to make ends meet, it’s crucial to our recovery that we give an extra helping hand to make sure that children and their families have access to proper nutrition during these uncertain times,” said Slaughter. “Without proper access to the essentials like good food, shelter, and basic utilities, families cannot properly do their part to slow the spread of this deadly virus.”
P-EBT benefits are available for families that have school-aged children that would have received free or reduced price school lunch under the National School Lunch Program or who are already receiving Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Families not currently receiving SNAP benefits can apply for P-EBT benefits at ABE.illinois.gov. Families that already receive SNAP benefits do not need to take any further action to receive P-EBT benefits, and the extra payments will be automatically applied to their Illinois Link Card.
“As our state moves forward and begins to recover, we must not forget to continue to give community support to those who are in need,” said Slaughter. “Uncertain times are ahead of us as we work to stop the spread of COVID-19, but I know that we will make it through by continuing to work together to face this unprecedented challenge.”
