ILLINOIS STATE SENATE DISTRICT 20: Martinez applauds three ‘Golden Apple’ teachers in 20th District

Award

Illinois State Senate District 20 issued the following announcement on May 21.

Ten educators in Illinois have received Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching this month, and Assistant Majority Leader Iris Y. Martinez extends her congratulations to three prestigious award-winning teachers at schools in her district.

“It’s an immense honor to have one teacher in our district receive this award, let alone three,” Martinez said. “Especially in the age of e-learning, dedicated educators are one of our best hopes to protect our students from falling behind.”

The following educators at schools in the 20th Senate District were selected to receive the award:

Mary Kovats, fifth grade teacher at Carl Von Linne Elementary School;

Jenine Wehbeh seventh and eighth grade teacher at John B. Murphy Elementary School; and

Colleen McKenna, fourth grade teacher at Salmon P. Chase Elementary School.

Golden Apple, the leading Illinois nonprofit committed to preparing, honoring and supporting exemplary educators who advance educational opportunities for students, honors 10 teachers every year in grades four through eight at schools within the state.

“The influence educators have on their student’s futures is immeasurable, and we’re so fortunate to have three of the best committed to enhancing the lives of youth in Chicago elementary schools,” Martinez said. “On behalf of the 20th District, I commend Mary Kovats, Jenine Wehbeh and Colleen McKenna on this esteemed honor.”

The Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching honors outstanding teachers for their roles in having lasting, positive effects on students’ lives and building stronger communities. Teacher award recipients demonstrate – in their teaching and results – significant, positive impact on their students’ growth and learning.
