Illinois State House District 27 issued the following announcement on Aug. 14.

To help ensure residents are able to remain in their homes through the COVID-19 pandemic, state Rep. Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, is highlighting Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s recent extension of the eviction moratorium through Saturday, Aug. 22.

“In these increasingly uncertain times, it’s imperative that our leadership does what it can to make sure that residents across the state have a roof over their heads,” said Slaughter. “I’m grateful for this extension and the peace of mind that it affords to residents who are struggling to make ends meet due to the economic effects of the pandemic.”

The governor recently announced that the statewide moratorium on evictions has been extended through Aug. 22. Landlords will be unable to evict tenants unless they have broken a building code violation, health ordinance or pose a direct threat to the safety of other tenants. During this time, those struggling to make payments should take advantage of the recently announced Emergency Rental Assistance (ERA) program. Applications for assistance will be available beginning Monday, Aug. 10. Residents are encouraged to visit ihda.org for more information.

“I am proud of the direction and leadership that we have received from Governor Pritzker in Illinois, and I implore President Trump to take notes,” said Slaughter. “Although these times are challenging for all of us, I know that we will make it through together.
