Members of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement held a rally Monday evening in Chicago to support more than 100 people arrested after looting and rioting caused an estimated $60 million worth of property damage in the day's early hours.

Thirteen Chicago police officers were injured during the downtown melee, Fox News reported. Monday's subsequent rally was held outside the police station in the South Loop.

“I don’t care if someone decides to loot a Gucci or a Macy’s or a Nike store, because that makes sure that person eats,” Black Lives Matter organizer Ariel Atkins told Fox News. “That makes sure that person has clothes. That is reparations. Anything they wanted to take, they can take it because these businesses have insurance.”

Monday's looting and rioting came after police shot a man on the South Side around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, and social media posts ignited the unrest later in the evening. One post falsely stated that Chicago police had shot and killed a 15-year-old boy, Fox News reported.

The injured man, 20-year-old Latrell Allen, was reported to be carrying a gun in the Englewood neighborhood when police responded to the call. When Allen fired shots at the police, officers fired back, Deputy Chief Delonda Tally of the CPD told Fox News, adding that Allen was taken to a local hospital afterwards.

Allen was charged with attempted murder after the incident. After he was shot, hundreds began to loot and riot in downtown Chicago early on Monday.

“This was not an organized protest," Police Superintendent David Brown told Fox News of the early Monday events. "Rather, this was an incident of pure criminality. This was an act of violence against our police officers and against our city.”

Black Lives Matter members criticized the police and claimed Chicago's Democratic Mayor Lori Lightfoot hasn't learned anything from previous protests and unrest throughout the city.

“The mayor clearly has not learned anything since May, and she would be wise to understand that the people will keep rising up until the [Chicago Police Department] is abolished and our Black communities are fully invested in,” Black Lives Matter said in a statement, Fox News reported.
