Krupa warns Illinois residents to beware of ballot measure: 'The fair tax is a scam'

Former candidate for Chicago alderman David Krupa can see the handwriting on the wall when it comes to the progressive tax system long pushed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

“The fair tax is a scam and if you vote for it you’re making yourself the victim,” Krupa told Chicago City Wire.

With the measure uncertain to pass on the Nov. 3 ballot, Democrat Lt. Gov. Julianna Stratton warned taxpayers if the measure falls short of passage when it’s on the ballot next month, a tax hike of as large as 20% could be looming. Krupa views that as an empty threat.

“Everyone knows the amount of revenue we would get out of the progressive tax would not be anywhere close to what it would be if taxes go up by that much,” he said. “That tells you they’re not intending to just tax the rich. The aim is the middle class and once they have the power to levy this tax at anyone in the state, that’s what’s going to happen.

Krupa is quick to point out the tax has yet to pan out as advertised in any state where it’s been enacted. Revenues in California have been barely half of what were promised, and Connecticut has lost more than $10 billion and 360,000 jobs since switching to a progressive income tax.

“If this thing were to ever actually become law, it would push so many more people out of the state, you can’t imagine,” Krupa added. “No one would want to stick around here, and who can blame them? The thought of the tax is bad enough but for them to actually stoop to threatening voters into supporting it is totally disgusting. I think it’s just a scare tactic, but with Springfield, you never really know.”
