Illinois State Senate District 6 issued the following announcement on Oct. 16.

State Senator Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago), Rep. Ann Williams (D-Chicago), and Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioner Kim Du Buclet (D-Chicago) are partnering for a ‘responsible recycling’ weekend with three high-demand events: Prescription Drug Take-back, Paper Shredding, and E-Waste Recycling.

“Environmental issues are the number one concern for our diligent constituents who care for our environment and are committed to effective recycling outcomes,” said Feigenholtz.

A survey commissioned by Covanta revealed that 62% of Americans lacked knowledge of proper recycling. The Illinois Electronic Recycling and Reuse Act banned 12 types of electronics from landfills, yet e-waste makes up over 70% of all toxic waste.

“COVID-19 has unveiled the environmental inequities across our city,” said Williams. “As legislators, we need to make sure that COVID can’t stop us from tackling issues that matter most.”

In addition to the shredding and e-waste event, Feigenholtz will also lead a Prescription Drug Takeback event that weekend alongside Commissioner Du Buclet.

“Flushing unused medications is bad for our lakes, streams, and drinking water,” said Du Buclet. “Safe drug disposal means safe water. Since 2017, we have destroyed more than 23,334,000 pills in our Prescription Drug Take-Back Program. It is a top-rated event, and I look forward to continuing this partnership.”

Joining Feigenholtz at the events is a growing list of local elected officials, including Williams, Du Buclet, Rep. Yoni Pizer, Alds. Tom Tunney and Scott Waguespack, and Cook County Commissioner Bridget Degnen.
