Rep. Jan Schakowsky (IL-9), said that she will introduce a measure to censure fellow Rep. Mary Miller (IL-15) after Miller made controversial statements prior to the Capitol riot.

Miller, in front of Trump supporters, courted controversy when she invoked the name of Adolf Hitler while speaking to the crowd. She said that Hitler was “right on one thing: Whoever has the youth has the future.” The speech drew fire from both sides of the aisle, prompting Miller to apologize for her remarks.

But Miller’s apology is not enough for Schakowsky who is working to introduce a measure to censure Miller. Schakowsky said that Miller’s behavior was unacceptable and she should be held accountable for it.

However, others are saying that measures to censure Miller could be a slippery slope toward violation of the right to free speech. An opinion piece on Daily Herald said that though Miller’s words are regrettable and offensive, Schakowsky should take the high road and avoid silencing her colleague for expressing her ideas.

The Daily Herald piece also said that politicians censoring their colleagues can be dangerous.

Other public figures who share the same sentiments have also spoken about the current ‘cancel culture’ that is being pervasive in modern society.

Conspiracy theorist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. experienced ‘cancel culture’ when he was banned from posting content on Instagram. Instagram blocked him after he posted anti-vaccine content.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis recognized the troublesome terrain of censoring individuals after Donald Trump was banned from most social media platforms. He said that this activity is purely “political manipulation.”
