Advocate Trinity Hospital issued the following announcement on Feb. 20.
A possible COVID-19 vaccine side effect is temporarily enlarged lymph nodes, which can appear on your mammogram and may prompt the need for additional imaging. To ensure accurate results, it is recommended to schedule your regular screening mammogram before the first COVID-19 vaccine or four weeks following the second vaccine dose. As a reminder, side effects are common with the COVID-19 vaccine and do not mean the vaccine in unsafe. These indicate that the body is building antibodies to fight the virus.
However, if you’ve already scheduled your screening mammogram or screening ultrasound, please keep your appointment. When you arrive, let your technologist know when you were vaccinated and in which arm you got your shot.
If you have new symptoms such as a lump, nipple discharge or skin changes, contact your provider to discuss scheduling a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound.
