Three days after being handpicked and confirmed as former Speaker Mike Madigan’s replacement, Edward Guerra Kodatt resigned.
His resignation was sent at the end of business hours on Feb. 23 and was acknowledged and received by the Office of Secretary of State on Feb. 24.
The resignation came on the heels of reports on “alleged questionable conduct.”
Madigan called for his successor to step down upon learning of the allegation.
“I don’t plan to speak to the background questions,” Madigan said on the day his second replacement was selected. “The proper questions were asked.”
“His name was put out in advance like everybody else, there was a complete circulation of resumes,” Madigan said. “Every resume that was submitted was circulated.”
He earlier said Kodatt “will stand on his own merits,” when asked about how people may view Kodatt because of his working relationship with him, the Chicago City Wire reported.
Many questions surround the selection process and State Rep. Kelly Cassidy said she is pushing for House Bill 3828 to make it more transparent.
“It sets a basic framework of transparency and engagement for the republic to have a little bit more confidence in this process that is understandably suspect to them,” Cassidy said.
Kodatt is eligible to receive a full-month salary based on state law, according to Illinois in Focus by TheCenterSquare.com, but he declined it.
