Rep. Eddie Acevedo (D-Chicago) pleaded not guilty to tax evasion charges as part of a federal investigation where longtime former House Speaker Mike Madigan has also allegedly been implicated.

Acevedo, who served as a member of Madigan's leadership team during his time in office, entered his plea during a virtual hearing overseen by Judge Matthew Kennelly. The charges are related to an ongoing federal probe involving ComEd and an alleged pay-for-play scheme.

According to WBEZ's March 5 report, Acevedo faces a six-count indictment, which includes accusations of ComEd's unreported income.

Acevedo served more than two decades in the House, including at least 14 years as an assistant majority leader under Madigan.

Madigan has not been charged and denies any wrongdoing.

He stepped down as House Speaker after a growing number of lawmakers from the Democratic party indicated they would not support his reelection bid as the speaker.
