Former Chicago Public Schools Superintendent Paul Vallas is blasting the school board’s handling of the COVID-19 crisis as a disaster.
“High school remote learning is a documented disaster,” Vallas recently posted on Twitter. “No plan to open city high schools. Union now wants older teens vaccinated first. Any excuse not to open.”
Vallas argues the prolonged school closings have played a major role in many of the other issues the city is now encountering with crime and violence.
“Meanwhile 567 school age children shot, 83 killed last year,” he added. “Third of car-jackings are teens. Closed schools a disaster.”
Younger students begin returning to school for in-person learning last month, but to date no firm plan has been put in place for high school students.
At the same time, high school sporting events have been put on hold until recently as part of the governor’s statewide mitigation plan.
