Letter to the Editor: Extend Liability Protections for Health Care Workers

Rushuniversitymedicalcenter

Dear Editor,

I am a registered nurse at Rush University Medical Center, and I’m writing to echo the sentiments that all healthcare professionals are feeling. My medical colleagues and I were grateful for Governor Pritzker’s executive order last spring to temporarily limit civil liability for health care workers during the ongoing coronavirus crisis, but I believe these protections should be extended permanently.

In these uncertain and devastating times, all health care workers in hospitals, rehabilitation units and nursing homes are especially vulnerable to liability lawsuits. I believe that given today’s circumstances, the only thing that medical and nursing home personnel should be worried about is saving lives, ensuring top care for patients and doing their best to battle this terrible pandemic. The last thing they should be worried about is being hit with a lawsuit for the actions taken to assist others and save a life.
