Chicago ward remapping by the Chicago City Council begins on Monday, but the Chicago Advisory Redistricting Commission has been proactive in getting insights from the community.

Terry Herlihy of Wicker Park advocated stopping gerrymandering.

“Put the wards in their original locations,” Herlihy said in a written testimony submitted to the commission. “Change votes in city council to a vote proportional to the latest ward census. This should be done in the whole country. Make votes of reps proportional to the district’s census. Make senator votes proportional to half the state’s census. This would be the value used in the electoral college and ends gerrymandering forever.”

The Chicago Advisory Redistricting Commission started holding public hearings June 22 with ASL and Spanish interpreters.

The commission aims to craft a “people-powered ward map for Chicago, by Chicagoans,” which the commission says would be entirely different from a map created by the Chicago City Council.

The Chicago City Council map needs the approval of at least 41 alderpeople by Dec. 1.
