A west-central Illinois State House representative recently called on Democrats to hold criminals responsible for their crimes following reports that Cook County has surpassed more than 1,000 homicides this year.

Illinois State House Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer (R-Jacksonville) took to social media to call on the state's Democrat majority in the state Legislature to take action on the disturbing statistic.

"We have to hold criminals accountable for the crimes they commit," Davidsmeyer said in his Wednesday, Dec. 1 Facebook post. "Personal Responsibility!! The majority party also must understand that changing the definition of crime doesn't make the problem go away. It just lets the criminal get away with something that should be a crime!!"

Davidsmeyer's post linked to a Chicago-area CBS affiliate's news story that said as of Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1,009 homicides had been committed in Cook County this year — 777 in Chicago alone. Of that number, 927 of the homicides were gun-related, according to the news story, which cited information from the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

The last time had more than 1,000 homicides in a single year was in 1994, when 1,141 homicides were reported. The record year for Cook County was the 1,229 homicides in 1991. Last year, Cook County had 986 homicides, a 40%  increase over 2019’s 675 homicides.

Davidsmeyer has represented Illinois' 100th State House District since he was appointed to the seat in December 2012 in place of Republican Jim Watson, who resigned to accept a position with the Illinois Petroleum Council. Davidsmeyer was elected to a new term in last year's general election, when he took more than 75% of the vote to soundly defeat his Democrat challenger Brandon Adams.

Illinois' 100th State House District includes all or parts of Calhoun County, Greene County, Jersey County, Macoupin County, Madison County, Morgan County, Pike County, Sangamon County and Scott County

Last spring, Davidsmeyer spoke out against long waits in the state to get a Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card, Metro East Sun reported.

"They've been going on for a long time; they got incredibly worse during COVID-19," Davidsmeyer said during a news conference at the time.
