Chicago Cardinal Blase J. Cupich appeared maskless, indoors when greeting Monique Sullivan, wife of Republican GOP Gubernatorial hopeful Jesse Sullivan, at the Spirit of St. Nicholas Ball.
Sullivan posted a photo of Cupich and his wife on his campaign Facebook page.
"Monique was thrilled to be able to support the Catholic Charities Archdiocese of Chicago at the Spirit of St. Nicholas ball," Sullivan wrote. "She got to meet Cardinal Blase Cupich of (the) Archdiocese of Chicago."
The Sullivans are Catholic.
The ball, held Friday Dec. 3 at the Chicago Hilton, hosted "more than 1,300" according to an announcement by Catholic Charities of Chicago, its host and beneficiary.
Cupich has been a major supporter of Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s "mitigations," including mandatory indoor masking and mandatory COVID-19 vaccination.
Cupich was an early supporter masks; he presented Mass in a mask back in April 2020.
Illinois is only one of a handful of states still requiring masks in public places. The others include Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington.
In contrast to some in Catholic leadership who have denied communion to the politicians for supporting laws antithetical to church beliefs, Cupich has been courting Pritzker.
He previously said he has not been granting religious exemptions to the Covid vaccine. Cupich mandated his staff receive vaccines.
The Chicago Tribune noted Cupich’s first order of business was to “Fix Chicago” when he was appointed in 2016.
Cupich is the ninth archbishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago.
