The Illinois Opportunity Project has issued the following press release:

Chicago, IL- After another spike in crime and lawlessness in the City of Chicago, today the Illinois Opportunity Project (IOP) is again calling for reforms to empower citizens with the tools to recall politicians.

“The city of Chicago is at a breaking point. Families risk their lives leaving home, visitors feel threatened shopping the Magnificent Mile during the holiday season, and commuters silently pray for safety as they travel to work,” said Mark Cavers, President of the Illinois Opportunity Project. “Voters have no remedy to put an end to the vicious violence and muddling leadership of Gov. Pritzker, Mayor Lightfoot, and Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx.”

Illinois Democrats have ignored calls to increase accountability and empower voters. In September, IOP, Senator Jason Barickman (R-Bloomington) and Representative Mark Batinick (R-Plainfield) launched a statewide ballot initiative to give voters the right to recall elected officials. The need for this emergency power has only become more dire since then.

“As homicides surpass 1,000 in Cook County and people fearfully navigate neighborhoods hit with 14 armed robberies in one night, why are families forced to wait years for politicians with police details to take their safety seriously?” asked Cavers.

“Today, families are beholden to the reckless policies of leaders who perpetuate a system that puts criminals before law-abiding citizens. Imagine a future where families can safely enjoy Chicago and go about their daily lives without looking protectively over their shoulders. Help make that future a reality by joining our fight to place a recall question on the 2022 ballot that would give voters the power to fire failing elected officials and hire ones who care about their safety.”

The proposed Advisory Question asks,“Shall Illinois voters be given the power to recall their elected officials?” To download and sign the petition, visit illinoisopportunity.org/RECALL
