'Band of Brothers' Enjoys a Sweep on Saturday

DePaul University Athletics issued the following announcement on Jan. 16

After opening the dual-match season with a win in the morning, defending BIG EAST champion DePaul doubled up and went for a sweep on Saturday.

The Blue Demons beat Illinois State 4-3 later that night after claiming the first four points and improving to 2-0.

Coach Matt Brothers' team eased past Army West Point 6-1 in its inaugural match of the Arthur Ashe Invitational at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center.

DePaul got off to a fast start against ISU (0-2) winning the doubles point behind the No. 1 tandem of Vito Tonejc and Marino Jakic and the No. 3 team of Tripp Tuff and Matteo Iaquinto. The doubles competition was tied 1-1 when Tuff and Iaquinto clinched the doubles point.

No. 1 singles player Tonejc led off with a 6-1, 6-3 decision over ISU's top player Nam Pham. Freshman Leon Huck followed Tonejc's lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Diego Herrera at No. 4 singles.

The match clincher was delivered by Iaquinto with a 6-1, 7-5 triumph over Arvid Hjalte.

Saving the best for last, DePaul concludes Arthur Ashe Invitational play with a 9 a.m. Sunday match against a formidable Florida Atlantic team that did not drop a set on Saturday, sweeping Illinois State and Army West point by identical 7-0 scores.
