A shooting on Chicago’s south side occurred during a high school baseball game the evening of Thursday, April 28 between St. Rita of Cascia High School and Marmion Academy.
"Shot fired, 2534 W 79th St., in the end zone at St. Rita," Spot News reported on Twitter.
The game was in the bottom of the third inning with the St. Rita Mustangs leading the Marmion Cadets 4-0 when the incident took place.
In the video, players are seen looking up before the all too familiar rat-a-tat sound of gunshots erupted. Players froze at first, unsure of what to do, before diving to the ground in defense.
It is unclear where the gunfire was aimed.
Shootings have become a more typical occurrence for individuals in and around Chicago.
Over the last few years, crime rates have risen drastically, with murder rates reaching record highs not seen since 1994.
Auto thefts climbed by 45%, thefts grew by 61% and burglaries jumped by 33% in 2022 alone, according to the Chicago Sun Times.
Chicago had eight homicides in a single day in early April.
Many people blame the city's crime problems on Cook County's failure to incarcerate offenders, Chicago City Wire reported.
