The superintendent of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) has introduced a new policy for the safety of the citizens.
David Brown said in a press release that the new foot pursuit policy should keep police officers safer. This new policy limits the situations in which officers can engage in chasing a criminal.
"The safety of our community members and our officers remains at the core of this new foot pursuit policy," Brown said in the release. "We collaborated internally with our officers and externally with our residents to develop a policy we all have a stake in."
Brown said the policy will be implemented by the end of the summer, according to a press release. Police officers will no longer be allowed to pursue criminals by foot if they believe the danger to themselves outweighs the benefits of apprehending the criminal, if they or a third party gets injured if they don't know their current location, if they lose their radio or other equipment or if they believe they wouldn't be able to contain the criminal once apprehended.
As of Sunday, there had been 282 murders, 1,148 shooting incidents, 935 criminal sexual assaults, 3,659 robberies, 2,553 aggravated batteries, 3,235 burglaries, 7,770 thefts and 5,869 motor vehicle thefts reported in the City of Chicago in 2022, according to data from the Chicago Police Department. Compared to the same time period last year, burglaries have increased by 31%, motor vehicle thefts have increased by 40% and thefts have increased by 65%.
Three Chicago police officers were injured over the course of Tuesday evening, ABC Chicago reported. Large crowds gathered at North Avenue beach, leading to several fights breaking out and a man shooting another man. Officers recovered a weapon at the beach. After the shooting, crowds dispersed to nearby North Avenue and Wells Street, where more fights broke out, and three CPD officers were injured. Two of the injured officers were treated on the scene, and one was transported to a hospital. A 16-year-old boy who struck a police officer was taken into custody.
