A deli in Chicago's Beverly neighborhood is so impacted by inflation, that it has given up on trying to adjust sandwich prices to accommodate.
Swanson's Deli, 2414 W. 103rd St, has posted a letter to "our loyal customers and friends" explaining why it has stopped posting prices on its chalkboard menus, hung on the wall behind its counters.
"As we face constant vendor price increases due to supply shortages and product demand increases worldwide, we have removed the prices from all our menus," the letter reads. "We apologize for this as we just cannot keep up!"
The letter includes a copy of the Wikipedia entry for "Shrinkflation," or shrinking size and quality of one's product, rather than raising prices, as a reaction to inflation.
Swanson's vows it "will never reduce our portion sizes or lower our product's quality for our customers."
"As we raise (and hopefully lower) prices moving forward, we are 100% committed to offering exactly the same products as always," the letter says.
Swanson's was founded in 1965. It was purchased by Greg Dix from its original owners in 2014
