Cougars Fall to Murray State 66-65

Box Score The Chicago State men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 66-65 decision to Murray State Tuesday at the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky. The Cougars led by 15 at the half and by 18 with 14:33 remaining in the game but shot just under 27 percent in the second half, making just 2-of-11 three pointers to watch the lead disintegrate in the waning moments. CSU led the entire game until the Racers erased the deficit and took the lead with 18 seconds remaining then held on for the win.

Jahsean Corbett led the Cougars with 25 points, his second consecutive 20-point effort, while Deshawn Jean-Charles was the only other Chicago State player in double figures with 12. 

1st Half - Chicago State 42, Murray State 27
Chicago State came out strong and started the game with a 10-2 run on buckets by Kedrick Green (3), Jahsean Corbett (2, 3) and Deshawn Jean-Charles (2)
The Cougars then went on a 3:20 scoring drought but the Racers only cut the margin to 10-7 at 14:41
Chicago State then reeled off a 20-1 run and had a 22-point lead, 30-8 at the 9:11 mark
Murray State countered with a 7-0 spurt to narrow the gap to 15, 30-15, with 6:20 left in the first half
The Racers cut the lead to 11 at the 2:47 mark but Corbett hit a three for the Cougars and the lead was back to 14
The Cougars closed the half with a 5-2 run and led 42-27 at the half
Corbett had 16 point for the Cougars on 6-of-9 shooting and Chicago State shot 38.5 percent from three (5-of-13)
The Racers struggled from distance, making just 2-of-11 three pointers 

2nd Half - Chicago State 23, Murray State 39
The Racers scored the first bucket of the second half but Wesley Cardet converted a pair of free throws followed by a Corbett layup and Jean-Charles free throw and the lead was 18, 47-29, at the 17:02 mark
The teams exchanged buckets before both went cold from the floor, not scoring for nearly three minutes and the Cougars led 51-37 with 10:36 left
Chicago State's drought lasted five minutes and the Racers took advantage with a 9-0 run to cut the lead to single digits, 51-43, with 8:38 remaining to play
Elijah Weaver snapped the Cougars drought at the 8:27 mark and the lead was back to 10, 53-43
Chicago State to that point shot just 21.1 percent (4-of-19) and were 0-of-8 from three
Following a Racers three, Wesley Cardet made a pair of free throws and Murray State when on 4-0 run and CSU's lead was five, 55-50, with 6:23 remaining to play
Corbett made a pair of free throws and the lead was back to seven, 57-50, at the 6:05 mark
Murray State closed the gap to one, 57-56 with a 6-0 run with 4:43 remaining
Corbett then made CSU's first three of the second half followed by a Jean-Charles layup and the Cougars were back up by six, 62-56, with 4:20 left to play
Murray State hit a three at the 1:56 mark to cut the gap in half, 62-59 with under two minutes to play
The Racers made a pair of free throws and the Cougars lead was down to one, 62-61, at the 1:09 mark
Elijah Weaver then converted a big three pointer for Chicago State and the lead was four, 65-61 with 46 seconds remaining
Murray State responded with layup, CSU foul and made free throw and the Cougars nursed a one-point lead, 65-64 with 35 second left to play
Weaver was fouled a missed the front end of a one-and-one, Murray State got the rebound and scored and had their first lead of the game, 66-65, with 18 second remaining to play
The Cougars attempted a three on the ensuing offensive possession, missed and the Racers secured the rebound for the win

Murray State 66, Chicago State 65

The next action for the CSU men's basketball team will be Friday, December 16 at 7 p.m. against Southern Illinois in Carbondale at the Banterra Center. The Salukis are 7-4 record and 3-1 at home this season with a road win over Oklahoma State. Chicago State and Southern Illinois have played 12 times in the all-time series between the two schools with the Salukis holding an 11-1 advantage, including a 7-0 mark in Carbondale.
