About the Crime:
This alert gives notice to citizens in the 003rd District (Grand Crossing) of reported Motor Vehicle Thefts/Attempt Motor Vehicle Thefts during the months of Februarya and March. In these incidents, the victim legally parked their vehicle on the street and returned to find their vehicle missing. In two of the incidents, the victim returned to their vehicle to find a window broken and that the steering column had been peeled in an attempt to take the vehicle. These Motor Vehicle Thefts/Attempt Motor Vehicle Thefts have occurred in the geographical locations listed below:
Incident locations and times:
- 400 Block of E. 74th St., on February 20-21, 2023, between 10:30 PM.-05:10 AM.
- 400 Block of E. 74th St, on February 22, 2023, between 06:45 AM.-06:00 PM.
- 7200 Block of S. Champlain Ave., on February 28-March 01, 2023, 09:15 PM.-12:30 AM.
- 7300 Block of S. Eberhart Ave., on March 01, 2023, at 05:00 AM.
- 7300 Block of S. Evans Ave., on March 04-05, 2023, between 10:30 PM.- 08:15 AM.
- 700 Block of E. 72nd St., on March 05, 2023, between 12:01 AM.-05:40 AM.
- Do not leave your keys in your vehicle or your vehicle running unattended.
- Immediately report suspicious activity.
- Keep your vehicle doors and windows secured.
- Be aware of these crimes and alert your neighbors.
- Pay special attention to any suspicious people loitering in the area.
- Immediately call -911 and provide a detailed description of the offender(s)
- including any vehicle description and license plate information.
- Kia and Hyundai owners can obtain anti-theft steering wheel locks from their local CAPS office.
- At all 22 police districts, residents can have a special, traceable marking etched into their vehicle's catalytic converter.
- Residents can be reimbursed for the cost of their GPS tracking device by registering with the City.
