The Midwest's largest college athletic conference is attracting fewer men's basketball players from the Midwest's largest public school district.

That's according to an analysis of four decades of team rosters by Chicago City Wire.

Big Ten basketball rosters included two Chicago Public Schools (CPS) products this 2022-23 season, and just one CPS product in each of the past three seasons, the analysis shows. That's down from a peak of nine in 1994-95.

Chicago Public Schools, which claims 327,388 students, produced 45 Big 10 men's basketball player seasons in the 1980s, 44 in the 1990s, 32 in the 2000s and 28 in the 2010s.

This decade, it is on track to produce only 17 Big Ten players.

The analysis tracks the original Big Ten schools, excluding Nebraska, Penn State, Rutgers and Maryland, which have rarely recruited players from Chicagoland.

Since the 1979-80 season, the University of Illinois has had 28 CPS players, followed by Iowa and Wisconsin (tied with 6) and Indiana and Purdue (tied with 4).

Michigan State is the only Big Ten school that hasn't had a rostered CPS product over the past 43 seasons.

Illinois' Terrence Shannon, Jr. of Lincoln Park H.S. and Michigan's Isaiah Barnes of Simeon were the only two CPS graduates on Big Ten rosters this season.

Shannon spent his first three years of college at Texas Tech before transferring to Illinois last spring.

Barnes played his first three high school seasons at Oak Park and River Forest H.S., a non-CPS school, before transferring to Simeon for his senior year. He chose Michigan over Illinois, Wisconsin, Texas A & M, DePaul, Georgia, Iowa and Iowa State.

Kansas State over Illinois

Next season, Barnes stands to be the only CPS product on a Big Ten roster.

All top CPS basketball recruits have committed elsewhere.

Guard Dai Dai Ames of Kenwood, CPS' top recruit from 2023, signed with Kansas State last summer. He holds offers from Illinois, Nebraska, Maryland and Michigan State, according to Rivals.com.

Ames' teammate, forward Davius Loury, remains uncommitted. He offers from Illinois, Purdue and Nebraska.

Whitney Young guard Daniel Johnson is also uncommitted, but has no Big Ten offers.

Johnson's teammate, guard Dalen Davis, is committed to Princeton. He turned down offers from Illinois and Nebraska.

Simeon forward Miles Rubin is committed to Loyola-Chicago. He also didn't receive any Big Ten offers.

In 2022, CPS' top recruit, A.J. Casey of Whitney Young, committed to University of Miami-Florida and its second-ranked recruit, Trey Pettigrew of Kenwood, committed to University of Nevada.

Like Barnes, both transferred to a CPS schools for their senior years only, from south suburban Tinley Park and west suburban Naperville, respectively.

Academic standards have proven a hurdle for CPS athletes in the Big 10.

Class of 2022 guard Jaylen Drane of Simeon took a fifth high school year at The Skill Factory in Atlanta, Georgia, to get more preparation for college. He held offers from Northern Illinois and Nebraska.

Class of 2021 guard Ahmad Bynum of Simeon, that year's top-ranked CPS recruit, committed to DePaul but couldn't maintain eligibility there and was suspended from the team in January. He is entering the transfer portal, according to published reports.

Illinois has four current commitments for this year's recruiting class, including players from Australia, Kansas, North Carolina and Maryland.
