Last night, Tuesday, April 25th, Congressman Jonathan L. Jackson (D-IL) co-anchored a CBC special order hour with Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick, addressing the "Default on America Act," a draconian plan proposed by Speaker McCarthy to default on the nation's debt. The act suggests drastic cuts to essential government programs, such as SNAP, Social Security, and housing programs, which serve as lifelines for our communities. Congressman Jackson passionately advocated for a clean debt limit bill to protect the well-being of our citizens and maintain our nation's financial stability.

In his speech, Congressman Jackson highlighted the disastrous consequences of the proposed act on his constituents in Illinois’s First Congressional District, which includes Chicago, and the Cook County communities of Midlothian, Posen, and Robbins; most of Blue Island; the south portion of Lemont; and parts of Oak Forest, Orland Park, Crestwood, and Beverly. He stated, "7,000 jobs would be lost in the first district. Mortgages in the first district would increase by $77,900 over the life of the 30-year loan for a newly purchased home. Over 103,400 people in the first district nearing retirement would lose $20,000 in their 401(k). 95,300 households in the first district would have their Social Security checks at risk."

The Congressman urged for unity in fighting against the proposed cuts and for the betterment of all Americans, concluding his speech with a call to action: "Together, let us stand strong against these cuts and fight for the betterment of all Americans. We must ensure that every person has a fair chance to thrive and that the promise of equality and justice remains at the heart of our great nation."
