On June 9, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), a member of the first impeachment panel of Donald Trump and author of the Classified Documents Accountability Act, released the following statement on the indictment of former President Donald Trump on federal charges:
“It has been clear to me that Donald Trump deliberately violated the law, and the law is now holding him accountable despite his efforts to use his presidential campaign to shield himself.
“This indictment has followed over a year of efforts to retrieve the classified documents without involving law enforcement, a lengthy investigation, the appointment of a special counsel, extensive litigation over search warrants, and testimony before a grand jury. Donald Trump is now presumed innocent until proven guilty before a jury that will be selected in his adopted home state and in front of a judge that he himself appointed. In short: Trump has been shown a level of care that no other American would have been afforded.
“While this indictment is unprecedented, so too are the actions of Donald Trump. He will now have the opportunity to defend himself and the government must prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt. I look forward to the legal process playing out without interference or intimidation by politicians of any political affiliation.”
