Chicago, IL - On July 7, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03), Vice Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Committee, released the following statement on the reports of illegal sexual relations between Chicago police officers and newly arrived migrants:
“I am deeply concerned about the reports of alleged sexual assault of migrants at a Chicago Police Department station, where many new arrivals have been as the City works quickly to stand up additional shelters. When migrants arrive in Chicago, they should find a safe haven from the trauma they have already experienced. Migrants are not criminals, and police stations are not at all equipped to provide shelter services. Any abuse of power by officers does not align with what Illinoisians stand for. At this moment, it is crucial that the investigation led by the Bureau of Internal Affairs and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability follows through and gets to the bottom of these reports with the full cooperation of the Chicago Police Department.
The Federal Government has a role in ensuring sanctuary cities like Chicago, who are actually welcoming migrants, are equipped with the resources necessary for providing emergency food and shelter. I’m disappointed in the insufficient funding awarded to Chicago by FEMA and CBP for these purposes and will keep fighting for Chicago to get its fair share ahead of the next tranche of Shelter and Services Program funding. I will continue to fight to secure all available federal funding needed to ensure dignified, long-term housing for new arrivals and everyone who calls Chicago home."
