CHICAGO-  On June 24, marks one year since the U.S. Supreme Court took away the constitutional right to abortion. Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement:

“One year after the conservative Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Illinois has become a Midwestern safe haven for reproductive health. Our health providers and advocates have stepped up to welcome an influx of out-of-state patients seeking abortions and our state legislators have passed shield laws for reproductive health care providers and patients. But people seeking abortion care should not have to travel across multiple state lines in fear of being criminalized.

“The consequences of the Supreme Court’s disastrous decision have been dire in particular for Latino, Black, Asian, Native and other marginalized communities where health care disparities were already profound. And states are continuing to pass dangerous laws that rip away abortion access.

“This week, I signed the discharge petition to force a floor vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act — a bill that codifies the right to abortion. We will continue to advocate for the President to use his executive authority to expand access to reproductive care, and continue to fight for reproductive freedom at the federal and local level.
