WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) issued the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision to block the President’s student loan debt relief program.
“This decision was handed down by a corrupt Supreme Court, and it is a tragedy for millions of Americans.
“It is a betrayal of the progress hard-won by activists fighting for student debt relief. Half of all Latinos would have had their student debt erased under the President’s plan.
“When it comes to forgiving debt or creating tax loopholes for the wealthy, nobody bats an eye. But when it comes to letting working people in on the relief, then we get a decision like this. Our fight for economic justice continues.
“This decision is another chapter in the story of one set of rules for the wealthy and well-connected and another set of rules for everyone else. A story of Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito selling the court to their billionaire buddies as they punish the rest of us. It is a story of a corrupt Supreme Court that must be reformed.”
