Chicago's Mayor Brandon Johnson has inexplicably stopped displaying the American flag at news conferences and in official social media videos.
In recent weeks, Johnson's administration has replaced the Stars and Stripes in favor of a second Chicago flag. Johnson's administration has not issued a statement explaining the decision to remove the American flag from appearance backgrounds staged by his administration, a longstanding mayoral tradition.
For example, on June 30, Mayor Johnson's staff posted a video on social media celebrating "World Refugee Day" with a backdrop of two Chicago flags.
Johnson's public statement also did not mention the United States as a destination for refugees.
Instead, Johnson said, "Every day people all over the world seek a better life in another country, many of them arriving right here in Chicago."
On America's Independence Day, Mayor Johnson tweeted a "Happy Fourth of July weekend" video message with the American flag noticeably missing from the backdrop, which again included two Chicago flags.
The profile photo on the mayor's official Twitter account also shows Johnson standing in front of two Chicago flags.
Chicago is set to host the Democratic National Convention in August 2024.
