Chicago - On August 23, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03), the Vice Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Committee, released the following statement after several libraries around Illinois, including libraries in Chicago, received bomb threats that forced them to close doors to the public:

"The past several days, our libraries - spaces that provide safety and pathways to learning and imagination for so many in our communities - have been disrupted by the threat of violence. Those threats and the impact they have on community members are unacceptable, and authorities must look into these with the seriousness that it merits. But let’s also be clear. These threats of violence mirror the actions of those who declare war on education and our liberties. From banning books to criminalizing librarians and teachers to harassing parents and children who dare to dream and learn, their hateful rhetoric perpetuates violence in our communities and puts thousands of innocent lives in danger.

Today and always, I stand with and support all the librarians and the communities affected by these actions. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to delivering a safe space where everyone is able to learn, grow, and dream."
