Former House Speaker Michael Madigan, who faces federal corruption charges set for trial in April, will not run for re-election as 13th Ward Democratic committeeman.
13th Ward Ald. Marty Quinn, a Madigan loyalist who shares an office with the indicted politician, is circulating nominating petitions for the political post.
Madigan, 81, faces a federal indictment that alleges he controlled a "criminal enterprise" aimed at preserving his power in the Illinois House, where he had served since 1974, and financially benefiting his political associates.
In October, federal prosecutors released a superseding indictment that added a corrpution charge against Madigan and his close friend and co-defendent Michael McClain related to an alleged corruption scheme involving AT&T Illinois. That charge is in addition to previously released charges that allege the duo caused ComEd to pay Madigan's allies as a reward for their loyalty to Madigan and other schemes.
As of June 30, two campaign funds controlled by Madigan, the 13th Ward Democratic Organization and Friends of Madigan, contained nearly $8.6 million.
